Lockleaze Old Boys made it four wins out of four in the Trophy, beating Olympus Jets by 65-49 in another convincing display by the whole squad. Jets had a 3-point head start but our mobile 3-2 zone prevented them from adding to it until the 4th minute and then went on to stop them from scoring for another 5 minutes after that. We held them to just 6 points in the first quarter while scoring 21 of our own for a 12 point lead. Rahquon started us off by swishing two free throws, then Keenan, Tony and Abe finished inside moves, before Andy started his account with a 2+1. Despite very close attention in the paint Abe got another from a rebound before Jets switched to a man-for-man defence to try, unsuccessfully, to shore up their leaks. Pete hit a three from the top, Mike made one of a pair and Jamie scored a lay-up in traffic in the last minute.
Jamie repeated the trick at the start of the second period, spinning in under the basket off a classy give-and-go with Abe on the free-throw line. Gordon and Lee both made one of a pair and then Gordon banked one in, while Andy got two more buckets inside. Jets finally managed to start one engine to score 9 points and hold us to only 10 in the quarter, but we still finished the half with a 12-point cushion. Perhaps it should have been 15, but Keenan’s amazing swish from a three-quarter-court heave was judged to have been released after the buzzer.
Jets got the other engine going for a while in the 3rd quarter to score 4 triples and keep it close again, but we still won the period 18-15 to stretch our lead to 15 points going into the final period. Tony hit two more baskets on the break, Abe got two more inside, one of them a ten-foot sky-hook, while Andy made two more free throws and another basket from a fake and drive. Jets were trying to press three-quarter-court now, but it backfired and allowed easy give and goes for Lee to lay-up from Mike’s pass and for Pete to bank in a 15-footer on the break from Lee’s half-court assist.
Andy was scoring steadily throughout the game, but he caught fire now for four more baskets in the first four minutes of the last quarter, while Lee swished a trey off Pete’s screen and scored another lay-up on a give and go. Mike a jumper from the top and Jamie and Keenan both made one of a pair for us to end the 4th quarter with another 17 points. Similar to Keenan’s effort at the end of the first half, Gordon swished a triple from top left of the arc, but this one was also discounted as out of time.
The more impressive story was at our defensive end where, as in the first period, all twelve players bust a gut to restrict Jets to just another 6 points for the 26-point win. Thanks must go to Karl and Densil, for volunteering to sit this one out because we had fourteen players. This meant that Densil added another win to his coaching record.
