Lockleaze Old Boys met Braves 3 again in their third match of this year’s Trophy competition. Having beaten them by one point in last season’s pool game but lost on paper because of a tabling error, Old Boys were well up for avenging that loss. Again we were forced to play without top scorer Andy when it was clear that we only had one referee and he volunteered to whistle so that the game could go ahead (thanks for that, big man!). Braves started the game with a +19 advantage – despite having +25 for the same game last season – but Old Boys came out firing on all cylinders to win the first quarter 22-7, reducing the 19 point advantage to just 6 after 10 minutes. Rahquon got two scores in the first two minutes, followed by Abe getting two inside buckets and swishing two freebies from the stripe. Rahqs got another in the low post before Pete swished a three from top left halfway through the quarter. Abe and Lee got two more inside scores and Jamie got one of a pair to finish the period.
Rahqs was having one of those unstoppable nights in the low post, scoring two more in the first couple of minutes of the second period, followed by a classy assist for Gordon to lay-up. He got his sixth basket straight after for 12 points in the half. Tony came in halfway through the quarter after a two-month Christmas lay-off, and immediately got fouled on a drive, making one of the pair. Abe finished off three more moves inside for an impressive 14 point half-time total for him and Tony got the last score of the quarter on another drive. We won the period 17-8 for a half-time score of 37-34 to us, including their 19-point head start.
Gordon got our score moving again at the start of the 3rd period, making one of a pair when he was fouled on a lay-up from Pete’s assist, then Lee swished a three from the top of the arc before Braves went on a bit of a rally that saw them briefly retake the lead. Rahqs got two more buckets in the post, Tony hit another one of a pair and Abe made both of his pair to finish the closest period of the game, 12-11 to us.
At 49-45 up we came out with real intent again at the start of the 4th and soon re-established complete control of the game, going on to win the final period by 21 points to just 4 in reply from Braves. After 7 more points from Abe he finished the game with a season-high 24 and his 6th MVP. Rahqs got another 4 points to bring his total to 20. Pete banked one on a fast-break from Tony’s assist, and next offence he faked a shot and fed Gordon inside for him to bank another. In the 10th minute Tony finished two fast breaks and made another one of a pair from the line for a 9-point total. Gordon had the last word with another baseline drive to score.
The final score was 71-49 to Old Boys (71-30 minus the advantage) after another solid all-round performance from the whole bench that leaves Old Boys with three wins out of three in the Trophy.
Scorers: Ahmed 24 (MVP), Chambers 20, Kissoon 9, Shovlin 7, Eleazar 5, Radford 5, Lee 1.
